Dr. Yui Shapard grew up in Tokyo, Japan. She spent summers in the United States and moved to Washington, DC in 2010. She graduated from the Royal School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, UK and was awarded an internship in medicine and surgery at the ASPCA Animal Hospital in N.Y.C.
Always an animal lover, Dr. Shapard knew she wanted to pursue a career in veterinary medicine when her dog went missing and she had to pick him up from a local municipal shelter. The state of the animals in the shelter inspired Dr. Shapard to follow a veterinary career to invoke change for animals. During veterinary school, she was a founding member of All4Paws, a student-run free veterinary clinc for low income residents needing help with their pets. She is Fear Free Certified – Fear Free is an organization whose mission “is to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety and stress in pets by inspiring and educating the people who care for them.”
In her spare time, Dr. Shapard enjoys reading, boxing, and meditating. She is fluent in Japanese. She lives in the East Village with her dog Manchee and her cat Shai.
